What is Public Access TV?

WBCAM is classified as a “public access” TV station. That means any Comcast subscriber who lives or works in West Bridgewater is allowed to use our equipment and create programming. WBCAM’s programs and equipment are funded by the West Bridgewater Cable Access Corporation.

Is WBCAM the same as the Cable Company (Comcast)?

No! WB-CAM is a town department, charged with overseeing local access, governmental, and educational programming on cable Channel 9 and Channel 98. WB-CAM is governed by a Board of Directors which is made up entirely of West Bridgewater residents. WBCAM has no say or influence over cable rates or reception issues.

Where does WBCAM get its funding from?

The Comcast cable company in West Bridgewater are contractually obligated to give the town 5% of their gross revenue. The town allocates the money towards the upkeep of West Bridgewater’s Community Access Media Station.

Who develops the programs seen on WBCAM?

If you live in West Bridgewater, MA or belong to a non-profit organization based in West Bridgewater or operate a business based in West Bridgewater, you can become a member, and begin producing your own programs. The WBCAM staff will help you get started, by teaching you how to use the equipment. As a producer, you’ll have to put together your own crew, but we can provide you with a list of volunteers and other members.

Can I do a show about anything?

With few exceptions, yes. Invasion of Privacy, insurrection against the United States Government, Libel and Slander, commercial use or use of a lottery are not allowed. Programming ideas are only limited by your imagination. You can do a show based on your interests, hobbies, community concerns…… virtually anything. WB-CAM does not censor material created by independent producers. People thinking about creating a show must read WB-CAM Policies & Regulations in its entirety, and should pay special attention to the section pertaining to prohibitions and clearances.

How can I get a copy of an WBCAM program?

Copies of programs produced by WBCAM staff and volunteers are available.  All we ask is a $5 donation and we can make a DVD copy for you. Or bring a portable hardive with a minimum of 32GB of storage and we will transfer the file for you for free.  Programs that are not produced “in house” cannot be copied here. In addition, we cannot make copies of high school tournament games per our agreement with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA).

How can I get an announcement on the Community Bulletin Board?

WBCAM will only post messages of non-profit, community organizations or businesses supporting a non-profit event. Messages will air two weeks prior to the event or up until the event and then will be taken down. Include all the information about the event as well as a contact number. What are your hours of operation?

We are generally open Monday through Thursday 2:00pm to 8:00pm and Fridays 2:00pm-7:00pm.  Although because our staff is often covering meetings and supervising location shoots, it’s best to call ahead at 508-408-6954 to make sure we’ll be in the office.

This Web Site is the place to see the most up-to-date schedule that reflects any last minute changes.

How can I get a  local event taped for airing?

You can e-mail us or call the studio to request event coverage and we will attempt to find one of our local producers/volunteers to tape the event. If you are interested in taping the event yourself you can come to the studio and be trained on how to use our equipment. If you are more comfortable using your own camcorder then give us the tape and we can determine if the program’s production quality is acceptable to put on the air.  In any case, please notify us as far in advance of the event as possible.

How can I produce my own show?

Contact our studio and write out a brief Program Proposal stating the basics of the program (type of program, length, where program will be shot, and equipment and manpower needed).

Can I borrow equipment or use your editing facilities for personal use, such as taping a wedding or birthday party?

WBCAM only lets people use our equipment and facilities for the production of programs that will be aired on the Public, Educational, Government Channels.

How much does it cost to become a member of WBCAM?

All persons, firms, corporations, businesses, organizations, institutions, and other entities in the Town of West Bridgewater who subscribe to the purpose of  West Bridgewater Community Access Media (WBCAM), and who support by participating service or shall be eligible for membership. In addition, bona fide candidates for public office for whom West Bridgewater residents may vote are entitled to free access.

Why can’t WBCAM cover more events happening in the towns?

Most Public Access studios are funded by a small cable license fee which pays for facility upkeep, utilities, and a small part-time or full-time staff.  The primary function for these employees job is to manage public resources, train people in TV production, and facilitate the telecast of programs. Therefore, WBCAM relies heavily on community volunteers to produce local events.  If you are interested in producing a program, assisting in the production of a program, or covering a community event, please contact the studio at 508-408-6954.

Do you accept interns or provide community service opportunities for West Bridgewater residents?

WBCAM provides West Bridgewater High School students and local college students a venue to complete their community service requirements. The WBCAM Internship Program is unpaid.
